Reader Reviewer—Reviews

The Bishops Corner Reader/Reviewers is a non-traditional book discussion group. Here are a few of our recent reviews:

The Secret of Lost Things by Sheridan Hay

* * * (three stars)

Arriving in New York from Tasmania with $300, her mother's ashes and a love of reading, 18-year-old Rosemary Savage finds work in the Arcade Bookshop. The book’s themes of loss and abandonment are presented in several variations and are tied together by the quest to find a missing Melville text. The quirky characters and details of 1970’s New York are intriguing enough to carry the reader to the end. Not a great book, but not a waste of time.

Reconciliation: Islam, Democracy, and the West by Benazir Bhutto

* * * * * (four stars)

Quite simply: an elegant, intelligent and passionate account of a woman’s desire to restore peace to her homeland. Finished just days before she was assassinated, this book should be mandatory reading for everyone.

Homo Politicus: The Strange and Scary Tribes that Run Our Government by Dana Milbank

* * * * (four stars)

Strange and scary, indeed, are the tales of “Potomac Man.” Milbank takes an amusing look at life in Washington, D.C., examining its mythology, folklore and customs. If you're amused by the antics of lawmakers and lobbyists and delight in tales of political corruption, you'll enjoy this cheerfully wicked account.
