About CASSIE
The West Hartford Public Library offers free access to computers and the Internet at all library
branches. Because computers are so popular, we have installed software known as "CASSIE"
that allows all computer users equal access time at each location.
Using your library card number and password (default password is your last name), CASSIE keeps track of the amount of time each user is on the computer, and limits users to one (1) hour of use per day.
CASSIE Manages Printing
Patrons also use CASSIE to pay for computer printouts.
A charge of ten (10) cents per page is applied for black & white printing and 25 cents per page for color printing.
Patrons may pay with cash at the Circulation Desk when they need to add money onto their accounts.
Access CASSIE with Library Cards
Computer users must have a valid library card. Go to the Circulation Desk if you do not have a library card. Sign into the computer using your library card number and your last name as the default password.
Out of town visitors may go to the Circulation Desk for a 1 day “Guest Pass” for access to the computers.
Frequently Asked Questions about CASSIE
What is CASSIE?
CASSIE is a computer software application that improves everyone’s access to public-use-computers in
libraries.
Why did the Library purchase CASSIE?
CASSIE ensures fairer and more equitable computer access for all patrons.
What exactly does CASSIE do?
CASSIE allocates individual session time and printer resources among all the patrons who want to use library
computers.
How do I use a CASSIE computer?
Patrons access the computer by entering a library identification number (found on your library card) and password
into the log on screen. Your default password is your last name. CASSIE authenticates that number by comparing it with the library’s circulation database, and
begins a time-limited session for the patron on that computer.
What if I don't have a library card?
Please go to the Circulation Desk to get a library card. Out of town visitors should see the Circulation Desk
staff for a 1 day “Guest Pass” for access to the computers.
Does CASSIE keep track of what I do with a library computer?
No. CASSIE does not keep track of where or what on the Internet an individual user does on the library
computers.
Does CASSIE help protect my privacy?
Yes, a primary purpose of CASSIE is to wipe clean all traces of each user from a library computer after every
session. In doing so, CASSIE prevents users from viewing anyone else’s work or Internet destinations (such as Bookmarks,
History, etc).
