Jewish New Year Postcards from 1900-1920
Greetings for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur

At the turn of the 20th century, the United States was in the midst of a massive wave of Jewish immigration from eastern Europe.   These new immigrants were fleeing pogroms, poverty and the anti-Semitism which had become rampant in their homelands.

Jews had been writing “Shana Tova” (“Happy New Year”) greetings to each other for several hundred years.  However, when the phenomenon of the picture postcard hit its peak of popularity from 1900-1910, there was a new way for them to share their greetings with each other.

The range of topics on these cards reflects the breadth of culture, belief, and optimism of the times.  This sampling helps inform us of how a previous generation of immigrants lived, valued their way of life, and dreamed.
