My Choice

I choose the chickadee,
plentiful and common,
to take my soul,
to wind it tightly in her
soft white breast
then stretch her perfect wings
and ferry my soul
upward, away from earth
higher and higher until only
the cosmos surrounds us
and there she will set me free
to roll and tumble in the boundless
reality of here and not here,
my soul coalescing again and again
until finally one shift brings
me back to be a chickadee
flying upward and away.

Finch Song

A finch sang today
sitting on the sill
filling the house with huge
brilliant sound that
rushed up against walls
broke into drops that
rolled along the floor
in a wave of gorgeousness
so immense
that I am sure
God heard.
