Faxon Branch

Tropic Isle

once
we traveled to a tropic isle
together you and I

azure sky, turquoise sea
white quartz sand warm underfoot
bright hued fish darting through
coral branches languidly waving
alone on the beach we swam naked
in crystal water, laughing with joy

lunch in the open air dining room
yellow birds twittering, hummingbirds
whirring, exotic fruits and fishes
papaya, conch, turtle soup
with wine we toasted ourselves

in our cottage high on a bluff
lazily we loved each other
slept cooled by an ocean breeze
murmur of surf far below

later we walked hand in hand
down toward the beach
on a patch of wet cement
with a stick we carved heart
our initials safe within:  JM-RM

thirty years on a tropic isle
baked in sun
drenched with rain
      do you suppose
            they might be there
               still
