Diving Bell May 2 - The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (2007)
In 1995, author and Elle magazine editor Jean-Dominique Bauby suffered a stroke that put him in a coma; he awakened mute and completely paralyzed. Mathieu Amalric stars in this adaptation of Bauby's autobiography, which he dictated by blinking. Julian Schnabel was nominated for the 2008 Best Director Oscar for his poignant film about the strength of the human spirit. Not Rated. French with English subtitles. 114 min.

Director James Longley's striking portrait of a nation divided presents a collage of images and commentary from ordinary Iraqi citizens coping with the effects of war, political unrest, religious feuds and an uncertain future. Moving beyond the abstract, the film powerfully captures the indelible humanity of those living in a country defined by conflict. Nominated for a Best Documentary Oscar. Not Rated. 94 min. • MAY 9 TRIPLE FEATURE - 4:00 p.m. - No End in Sight (2007)
Oscar-nominated documentary from filmmaker (and former Brookings Institution fellow) Charles Ferguson examines the decisions that led to the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq and the handling of the subsequent occupation. Featuring exclusive interviews with central players and detailed analysis, the film pulls no punches as it chronicles the twists and turns America took on the path to war. Not rated. 102 min.

• May 9 TRIPLE FEATURE - 6:30 p.m. - In the Valley of Elah (2007)
When exemplary soldier Mike Deerfield (Jonathan Tucker) goes missing after returning from Iraq, his concerned parents, Hank, a career officer (Tommy Lee Jones, in an Oscar-nominated role), and Joan (Susan Sarandon), hire crack police Detective Emily Sanders (Charlize Theron) to investigate. Director Paul Haggis based the script on actual events. James Franco, Josh Brolin and Jason Patric co-star. Rated R. 121 min.

lars May 23 - Lars and the Real Girl (2007)
Ryan Gosling plays the title character in this sweet, quirky comedy about a delusional young man who buys a life-size doll over the Internet. When the besotted young man starts telling people that the doll is his girlfriend, his brother and sister-in-law decide it's time to intervene. Co-starring Patricia Clarkson, Emily Mortimer, Kelli Garner and Paul Schneider. Rated PG-13. 95 min.
starting out May 30 - Starting Out in the Evening (2007)
Aiming to revive the faded career of ailing author Leonard Schiller (Frank Langella), enterprising graduate student Heather Wolfe (Lauren Ambrose) makes his novels the topic of her master's thesis. While Heather raises Leonard's hopes of a literary comeback, his middle-aged daughter (played by Lili Taylor) remains dubious. First-time director Andrew Wagner's screen adaptation is based on a book by Brian Morton. Rated PG-13. 111 min.
into the wild June 6 - Into the Wild (2007)
Sean Penn directs this feature based on Jon Krakauer's true story of a young man who gives up everything to lead a solitary life in the wild. Christopher McCandless (Emile Hirsch), a middle-class college graduate, abandons his safe existence for the harsh yet beautiful terrain of Alaska. William Hurt and Marcia Gay Harden co-star, along with Catherine Keener, Vince Vaughn and Hal Holbrook (in an Oscar-nominated role). Rated R. 148 min.

ALL FILMS BEGIN AT 6:30 p.m. on Fridays (except for the triple feature) at the Noah Webster Library at Blue Back Square. Films are screened in the Library Meeting Room on the lower level. Seating is limited to the first 60 people. DOORS OPEN AT 6:00 p.m. sharp. No entry after the film starts, so please arrive well in advance of the screening. Complimentary coffee is provided before each film. Admission free, but entry is restricted in accordance with MPAA ratings.The West Hartford Public Library, Noah Webster Library, is located at 20 S. Main Street, West Hartford. The town will provide free parking for all library filmgoers who use the Isham Garage and bring their parking ticket to the movie for validation.
