Film (1940): A shy ladies' companion, staying in Monte Carlo with her stuffy employer, meets the wealthy Maxim de Winter. She and Max fall in love, marry and return to Manderlay, his large country estate in Cornwall. Max is still troubled by the death of his first wife, Rebecca, in a boating accident the year before. The second Mrs. de Winter clashes with the housekeeper, Mrs. Danvers, and discovers that Rebecca still has a strange hold on everyone at Manderlay. Directed by Alfred Hitchcock. 130 min. |

April 13 - A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess

Film(1971) Rated R: Malcolm McDowell as the charismatic and psychopathic delinquent Alex DeLarge. He is the leader of a small gang of thugs (Pete, Georgie and Dim), whom he calls his "droogs" (from the Russian word друг meaning "friend" or "buddy"). Alex narrates most of the film in "Nadsat", a fractured contemporary adolescent argot. A Clockwork Orange has disturbing, violent imagery to facilitate social commentary on psychiatry, youth gangs, and other topics in a futuristic dystopian Britain. The adaptation was produced, co-written, and directed by Stanley Kubrick. 137 min. |

Film (1946): The distinguished David Lean directed this adaptation of Dickens' novel about an uncultured boy thrust into high society by a mysterious benefactor. Young Pip (Anthony Wager) develops an infatuation for the unattainable Estella (Jean Simmons), a relationship engineered by the mad Miss Havisham (Martita Hunt). Grown up Pip (John Mills) gets life lessons from roommate Herbert Pocket (Alec Guiness), but even Herbert can't prepare Pip for heartache. Directed by David Lean. 118 min. |

| Book discussion begins at 6:00 p.m. Doors open for the film at 7:00 p.m. at the Noah Webster Library, 20 S. Main Street, West Hartford. Extra copies of each book will be available for loan at the library. Those attending the book discussions will receive priority seating for the film. Films are screened in the Library Meeting
Room on the lower level. Film seating is limited to the
first 60 people. No
entry after the film starts. Complimentary donated coffee is
provided before each film. Admission
free, but entry is restricted
in accordance with MPAA ratings. The town will provide free parking for
all library filmgoers who use the Isham Garage and bring their
