8 Elements of the Romantic Comedy
Derived from notes taken during Scott Anderson & JP Ouellette's
Romantic Comedy seminar on February 5, 2005.

1) The Gaze. The Gaze almost always takes place within the first three pages. The main character gazes at the romantic interest. Both characters have to be likeable and intrinsically kind.

2) The Soda Shop. Where they actually talk and establish their attraction. The express what they want out of life, not generally what they need. The characters have to be opposites.

3) The Joust. The fight, they argue, they disagree. Verbal sparring.

4) The Dance. They are forced to work together due to circumstances.

5) The Kiss. An acknowledgment of their attraction, most often chaste. If there isn't a kiss, there is The Look--she/he sees the other differently for the first time.

6) The Break-Up. Generally more than one. Beliefs, attitudes, values, responsibilities are pulling them apart.

7) The Mirror. The Apparent Defeat--characters realize their flaws, who they are and what they need. Often done with voice over. Often with pratfall--a visible interpretation of an internal conflict.

8) Final Consummation. Almost always the last 90 seconds. They kiss, the music crescendos.
